"Relic"

"Relic" was created for the 2016 Decked Out skate deck show at the 4Art Space in the Zhou B Art Center.  I knew from the start I wanted to make a biomechanical piece for the show.  Once I procured a 7-ply hard maple skate deck the design work started.  I did internet research on artists such as HR Giger and Guy Aitchison.  I have always loved their work.

The negative space was removed with forstner bits and a scroll saw.  Once removed all the carving started.  The carving was done using a Foredom carver, rasps, scrapers and riflers.  After the rough carving came hours of sanding and smoothing.  When carving into plywood all the layers can distract ones eyes and it becomes hard to see all detail carving and overall shape of the piece.  To give the deck one cohesive surface I painted the deck a flat black.  It took two coats of primer and three coats of flat black, with sanding in between each coat, to give it the smooth appearance.
