"Progeny"

"Progeny" was created for an art exhibit at a local Green Bay, WI gallery.  Once again I was influenced by the amazing work of H.R. Giger.

The negative space was removed with forstner bits and a scroll saw.  Once removed all the carving started.  The carving was done using a Foredom carver, rasps, scrapers and riflers.  After the rough carving came hours of sanding and smoothing.  When carving into plywood all the layers can distract ones eyes and it becomes hard to see all detail carving and overall shape of the piece.  To give the deck one cohesive surface I painted the deck with a bone white paint.  It took four coats of primer and three coats of flat white, with sanding in between each coat, to give it the smooth appearance.
